I was looking at different engine configurations on Wikipedia, and came across the Stelzer engine. It sounds perfect for a mech. It reciprocates, which means that you don't need complicated gearing to make the legs move back and forth. It's also very simple, which reduces the already high number of parts in a mech. http://www.faktuell.de/StelzerMotor/stelzermotor-index1.shtml It's in German, but you can plug it into Babelfish.
