I was looking at different engine configurations on Wikipedia, and came across the Stelzer engine.  It sounds perfect for a mech.  It reciprocates, which means that you don't need complicated gearing to make the legs move back and forth.  It's also very simple, which reduces the already high number of parts in a mech.

It's in German, but you can plug it into Babelfish.

We would still have to gear down, or have an engine so large it would not fit on the platform. Even taking leveraging into account. We need a lot of torque.

On a side note, Kingery has a (completely not MPS related) engine design, which struck me as a rotory Stelzer when I saw it.
